Trust melody exhibit by Ashley holmes.
Commissioned by Absolutely Cultured to respond to an exhibition held @humberstreetgallery as part of their thursday lates commissioned program. It was response for the exhibit Trust Melody by @ashleyholmes__ My site specific response was a narrative based dance expressing the evolution of Bruk ups style. Directed by senses emitting off of the exhibits installations and art works. To fully absorb the exhibit through the movements. I spent a few hours standing walking or closely observing the aesthetics, textures and colors. To generate a feeling I felt was fitting, for each section of space I was in. Which helped decide on which movements fit into what space. The wooden crates was my starting point. Acting as a compass and an anchor amidst the blue hue of ocean that covered the exhibit. The influence of ocean sounds resonated with the transference of bruk up dancing hitting the shores of New York in the 90s. I desired to bring that experience to the exhibition. To borrow the estate and influence of bruk ups creator George Adam’s. To then enter into my own style as an off branch; connected to bruk ups larger historic tree. My intent was to tell the story of the styles evolution growing from Jamaican bruk up; evolving into another form, style and genre known as free form bruk up.
